Project Description

2023 to 2024 | Communities near the Gaza border, Israel | Israel Antiquities Authority

Following the attack of 7 October 2023 on the communities near the Gaza border, the Israel Antiquities Authority, together with the government’s Tekuma administration, initiated a project to create a detailed 3D reconstruction of the affected kibbutzim: an accurate, immersive record of the destruction. Lecturers and graduates of the Department of Photographic Communication took part in the documentation, in a collaboration led by Prof. Moshe Caine, Dr. Doron Altaratz and the Israel Antiquities Authority.

The documentation combined airborne drones, laser and LiDAR scanners, 360 panoramic cameras and high-resolution ground photography, alongside recordings, messages and testimonies, moving from a landscape-scale overview down to single houses, inside and out. It was a race against time: winter and the need to rebuild the homes threatened to erase the evidence. The capture was followed by a long process of data management, image processing and 3D reconstruction.

Team. Initiated by the Israel Antiquities Authority with the Tekuma administration. Imaging led by Prof. Moshe Caine and Dr. Doron Altaratz with lecturers and graduates of the Department of Photographic Communication, Jerusalem Multidisciplinary College.
