Project Description

2026 | Karpas peninsula, Cyprus | Commissioned by UNDP

Documentation of the historic graffiti in the 15th-century Gothic chapel of the Apostolos Andreas Monastery, a pilgrimage site shared by Christian and Muslim communities at the tip of the Karpas peninsula. Working at three scales, from a 3,692-image model of the whole chapel to wall-surface models and close-range records of single inscriptions, we recovered layers of writing that are largely invisible to the eye and made them accessible through a virtual tour.

Team. Mia Gaia Trentin (Instituto de Estudos Medievais, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa) and Doron Altaratz (DINÂMIA’CET, Iscte). Commissioned by UNDP Cyprus within the bi-communal restoration of the monastery.
